Change/Reset the Directory Services Restore Mode Password in Active Directory

Sometimes, domain Administrators need to access domain controllers in "Directory Services Restore Mode" to manage them, for exemple to execute : metadate cleanup, seize roles, etc... To do these tasks, Administrators need to know the password of restoration mode to log on, if it is unknown, just folow the steps below to reset this password.
  1. Open Command prompt with Administrator privileges. Type Ntdsutil then press Enter.
  2. Type set dsrm password then press Enter
  3. Type reset password on server null then press Enter
  4. Type the new password the presse Enter
  5. Retype the password, press Enter then type quit and press Enter twice. The password of Restore Mode is changed.
